Self-Awareness is a Pillar of Good Leadership
Morgan’s Observations on Leadership:
I and others believe that self-awareness is a pillar of good leadership.
Doubt it? Think about a bad boss that you've had. Got one in mind (we all have at least one)? Did they know how they impacted others? Did they think they were good and others 'just didn't get it?' Were they leaders or were they managers?
I think a good bit of our work is to explore who we are and how we are. We've asked some simple questions that have yielded some interesting answers and more than one SCILster has said that they hadn't thought about that. Pick the subject: biases, examples of others who've been leaders for us, artifacts of our ethnicity/history. We invite people to enter the stretch zone where they can learn about themselves and their peers.
Take this recent photo of the moon. SCIL is a laboratory where we can explore the boundaries of where the light strikes us and how we're reflected into the world. As we probe the zone where the shadow begins, the texture and contrast are verrrry interesting. The more we explore that area, the broader the brilliance becomes. The more we know about ourselves, the better we can serve others.
A lot of our work is going into the dark shadowy spaces to find out more about ourselves.
