Reedsburg Leaders receive SCIL Leadership Award

Every year the Sauk County Institute of Leadership (SCIL) Board solicits internal nominations for the SCIL Leadership Award. Recommendations from the board are considered for individuals or organizations who exemplify leadership in the county. This year there were several worthy contenders in the mix. The recipients of the 2024 SCIL Leadership Award are the dynamic duo of Reedsburg City Administrator Tim Becker and Vierbicher Principal and Community Development Consultant Kurt Muchow.

Each has a tremendous record as singular contributors to the communities that they serve. (Muchow is also Excelsior Town Chair) As a team they are a brilliant example of synergy in service. That's been evident for some time; however, the display that they gave at the Sauk County Development Corporation event in Lake Delton and then again at SCIL in January made it clear to so many that great things are happening in Reedsburg and the leadership teamwork is inspiring.

Tim Becker

Served the City of Reedsburg for nearly 18 years, first as Police Chief then he traded that hat for the one that says City Administrator for the last 5 yrs. He’s on the board of the Community Foundation for South Central Wisconsin and has been very involved with board leadership of the Boys and Girls Club – both locally and regionally. Tim is retiring from City service in mid-June and will be joining Friede & Associates after that.

Kurt Muchow

Kurt has over 35 years of experience at Vierbicher serving as a Community Development Consultant to Wisconsin municipalities. He is the principal of Vierbicher and serves as the Chairman of the Board, Manager of Vierbicher’s Reedsburg and Prairie du Chien Offices, and Director of Business Development.

He also serves on the Board of Directors for the Reedsburg Area Medical Center, Sauk County Development Corporation Board of Directors, Reedsburg Senior Life Center Board of Directors, Community First Bank Board of Directors,  Town of Excelsior Town Board Chair, Town of Excelsior Plan Commission Chair and Vierbicher Chairman of the Board.

Top men. Top Team.

Kurt and Tim are like Salt and Pepper; one without the other doesn’t sound right. But it’s more than just two people. It is two individuals aligned by more than just a job. They have an aligned vision. An entwined purpose. They have taken that vision and acted on it. ‘How can we make Reedsburg the best it can be?’ They have then made steps to make this happen. This shows that authentic leadership comes from an agreed purpose and a combined willingness to ’see’ the other side of the story. By making all people feel seen, whether they be developers or employers. Employees or even just each other show that people need people to succeed. It’s not about what we need as individuals, but it’s actually about what we are doing to serve the needs of others. - Thomas Cox, Executive Director, Sauk County Development Corporation

Tim Becker and Kurt Muchow share remarks during the 2024 SCIL Graduation at an impromptu “lectern” after the group had to relocate rooms during a tornado warning.
